Command blocks are useful for Minecraft servers that use custom maps, minigames, adventure systems, teleportation systems, automated events, and other command-based mechanics.
By default, command blocks may not be enabled on a Minecraft server. When they are disabled, command blocks will not execute commands even if they have been placed in the world.
This guide explains how to enable command blocks using the server.properties file.
This guide is written for Minecraft: Java Edition servers, including Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, and Purpur servers.
What Are Minecraft Command Blocks? #
Command blocks are blocks that can automatically execute Minecraft commands.
They are commonly used for:
- Adventure maps
- Minigames
- Custom events
- Teleportation systems
- Automated messages
- Custom gameplay mechanics
- Server automation
- Redstone-based commands
Command blocks are different from normal player commands because they can execute commands automatically when activated.
How to Enable Command Blocks #
Step 1: Stop Your Minecraft Server #
Stop the Minecraft server completely.
This makes sure the configuration file can be safely edited before the server starts again.
Step 2: Open Your Server Files #
Open your Game Panel’s File Manager.
Locate:
server.properties
Open the file in the panel’s text editor.
Step 3: Find enable-command-block #
Look for:
enable-command-block=false
Step 4: Change the Setting #
Change it to:
enable-command-block=true
Step 5: Save server.properties #
Save the configuration file.
Make sure the change has been saved before restarting the server.
Step 6: Start the Server #
Start your Minecraft server again.
Command blocks should now be enabled.
How to Get a Command Block #
Once command blocks are enabled, a player with the appropriate permissions can obtain one using:
/give @p command_block
You can also give a specific player a command block:
/give PlayerName command_block
Replace:
PlayerName
with the player’s Minecraft username.
You generally need the appropriate permission to use /give.
How to Test a Command Block #
After obtaining a command block:
- Place the command block.
- Open the command block interface.
- Enter a command.
- Choose how the command block should activate.
- Activate the command block.
- Check whether the command executes correctly.
For example, you can test a simple message command:
say Hello from the command block!
Activate the command block and check the Minecraft chat.
Command Block Permissions and Security #
Command blocks can execute commands with powerful effects.
Because of this, you should only allow trusted players to place and configure command blocks.
A command block can be used to execute commands that:
- Teleport players
- Give items
- Change game modes
- Modify the world
- Kill entities
- Change server settings
- Execute commands through command systems
On a public server, avoid giving normal players unnecessary access to command blocks.
Command Blocks on Paper and Spigot Servers #
Paper and Spigot servers also use:
server.properties
to control whether command blocks are enabled.
The setting is:
enable-command-block=true
Plugins can also affect what commands players are allowed to execute.
If a command block appears to work but a specific command does not, check the command itself and any plugins that may modify or restrict it.
Command Blocks Are Not the Same as Player Permissions #
Enabling command blocks does not give every player permission to use administrative commands.
The setting:
enable-command-block=true
allows command blocks to execute commands.
It does not mean that every player automatically receives OP permissions.
You should still use a proper permissions system for player access.
Common Command Block Problems #
Command Blocks Do Not Execute #
Check:
enable-command-block=true
inside:
server.properties
Then restart the server.
The Setting Keeps Reverting #
Make sure the server is fully stopped before editing server.properties.
If another system is changing the configuration, check your hosting setup and server management tools.
Players Can Obtain Command Blocks #
If players should not have access to command blocks, check their permissions.
Do not give regular players OP simply to allow access to another command.
A Command Works in Chat but Not in a Command Block #
Some commands behave differently when executed by a command block.
Check the command syntax and make sure the command block has the required activation conditions.
When Should You Enable Command Blocks? #
Command blocks are useful when you are running:
- Custom adventure maps
- Minigames
- Parkour maps
- Automated events
- Custom server mechanics
- Command-based teleportation systems
- Custom progression systems
If your server does not use command blocks, there is generally no need to enable them.
