Changing the gamemode of a Minecraft server allows you to control how players interact with the world.
Minecraft has four main gamemodes: Survival, Creative, Adventure, and Spectator. Each gamemode provides players with different abilities and gameplay mechanics.
This guide explains how to change a player’s gamemode and how to configure the default gamemode for new players.
This guide is written for Minecraft: Java Edition servers, including Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, and Purpur servers.
Minecraft Gamemodes Explained #
Minecraft has four main gamemodes.
| Gamemode | Description |
|---|---|
| Survival | Players collect resources, manage health and hunger, and survive in the world |
| Creative | Players have unlimited resources, can fly, and are generally not affected by normal survival mechanics |
| Adventure | Designed for custom maps and restricts certain interactions with blocks |
| Spectator | Allows players to observe the world without normally interacting with it |
The gamemode you choose depends on how you want your server to operate.
Method 1: Change a Player’s Gamemode Using the Console #
The easiest way to change a player’s gamemode is through the Game Panel console.
Step 1: Open the Game Panel #
Log in to your Game Panel.
Select the Minecraft server you want to manage.
Step 2: Open the Console #
Open the Console section of your server.
Step 3: Enter the Gamemode Command #
To change a player to Survival, use:
gamemode survival PlayerName
For Creative:
gamemode creative PlayerName
For Adventure:
gamemode adventure PlayerName
For Spectator:
gamemode spectator PlayerName
Replace:
PlayerName
with the player’s Minecraft username.
Step 4: Confirm the Change #
The player’s gamemode should change immediately.
They do not normally need to reconnect to the server.
Method 2: Change Your Own Gamemode In-Game #
If you have permission to use the command, you can change your own gamemode.
For Survival:
/gamemode survival
For Creative:
/gamemode creative
For Adventure:
/gamemode adventure
For Spectator:
/gamemode spectator
You can also use the numeric gamemode values supported by Minecraft, but using the gamemode names is recommended because they are easier to understand.
Method 3: Change the Default Gamemode #
If you want new players to automatically join in a specific gamemode, you can change the default gamemode in server.properties.
Step 1: Stop the Server #
Stop your Minecraft server.
Step 2: Open server.properties #
Open:
server.properties
in your Game Panel’s File Manager.
Step 3: Find the gamemode Setting #
Look for:
gamemode=
You may see:
gamemode=survival
Step 4: Change the Default Gamemode #
For Survival:
gamemode=survival
For Creative:
gamemode=creative
For Adventure:
gamemode=adventure
For Spectator:
gamemode=spectator
Step 5: Save the File #
Save your changes.
Step 6: Start the Server #
Start your Minecraft server again.
New players will use the configured default gamemode unless another system changes their gamemode.
Changing the Default Gamemode Does Not Always Change Existing Players #
The gamemode setting is primarily used when players join for the first time or do not already have a saved player gamemode.
Changing:
gamemode=creative
does not necessarily force every existing player into Creative.
If you want to change a specific player’s gamemode, use:
/gamemode creative PlayerName
Common Gamemode Mistakes #
Players Keep Returning to the Wrong Gamemode #
A plugin or server system may be changing the player’s gamemode when they join.
Check plugins that manage:
- Ranks
- Worlds
- Spawn areas
- Minigames
- Lobby systems
- Per-world settings
Players Can Change Their Own Gamemode #
Do not give regular players OP simply to allow access to basic commands.
Use a permissions plugin if specific players need access to gamemode commands.
Creative Players Can Access Survival Worlds #
If your server has multiple worlds, make sure your permissions and world management plugins are configured correctly.
A player who has Creative access should not automatically have unrestricted access to every part of a public Survival server.
