Changing the difficulty of a Minecraft server allows you to control how challenging survival gameplay is for your players.
Minecraft has four difficulty settings: Peaceful, Easy, Normal, and Hard. The difficulty affects hostile mobs, damage, hunger, and several other gameplay mechanics.
This guide explains how to change the difficulty of a Minecraft server using the Game Panel, the Minecraft console, or the server.properties file.
This guide is written for Minecraft: Java Edition servers, including Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, and Purpur servers.
Minecraft Difficulty Levels Explained #
Minecraft has four difficulty levels.
| Difficulty | Description |
|---|---|
| Peaceful | Hostile mobs generally do not spawn and the player does not lose hunger |
| Easy | Hostile mobs spawn but deal less damage |
| Normal | Standard Minecraft survival difficulty |
| Hard | Hostile mobs deal more damage and survival mechanics are more difficult |
The difficulty affects the overall survival experience of your server.
